IF I CAN DREAM.

There are many books on Elvis Presley out there: I would say there are probably hundreds or even thousands of them. Most of them cover every aspect of Elvis’ life, and some of them contain just pictures and graphics, or even lyrics to his songs. Gosh, even books on his many movies – and how much of a good actor he was, or what a big flop the movie turned out to be. For the record, I loved all of his movies.
The same old story is repeated over and over again in most books, covering information from his birth all the way to his death, and the in between bits: like the drug problems that Elvis had, and how obese he was. Not to mention the crap that was written in some of them, which not only myself, but many Elvis fans out there, who believe that the books are completely wrong and totally untrue.. If Elvis was alive, he would be very hurt and upset reading this about himself.
Some Authors are out there using Elvis’ name to make a ton of money, on the load of garbage that they are publishing, and to this day, there is only a very few books to be taken seriously, that don’t contain any bullshit by the Author.. I really despise with a passion, going into a bookstore, spending my money on what appears to look like a good book to read – only to find out it is a load of crap from beginning to end.
Now, I am not out in any way to criticize any particular person or persons, but please know that this is only a discussion, and my personal thoughts on this matter. I must also mention that I am not any kind of Dramatic or Biography judge. But I do know what a good book can be, and what a bad book can be, when it comes to my favourite idol, Elvis, I do have every right to stick up for him. You know, it really breaks my heart and makes me extremely mad, when people write hurtful things about Elvis, and make him out to be the person he never was...These people should really do their research, to find the facts.
So with all this in mind, I would like to tell you what is my favourite Elvis book to read, and what I believe to be the most truthful and honest account of Elvis Presley. A Biography called: ‘IF I CAN DREAM’ ELVIS OWN STORY. This book was written by a man named Larry Geller. Before I get into details about this book, I would firstly like to mention a little about Larry the Author. Larry met Elvis way back, and became his hairdresser and later on in time Larry became Elvis’ confidante and Spiritual adviser. During his time with Elvis, Larry wrote down every account on Elvis, from what he did, to what he ate, also, what he said. Larry actually wrote all this down in his diary, step-by-step, day to day. This was done on Elvis’ instructions, as Elvis actually wanted all this to be made into a book. It is very straight forward and easy to understand, with some really nice pictures throughout the book..
I have read this book a couple of times, and noticed how Elvis and Larry just bonded together and how their friendship and their trust for one another just grew stronger. It starts from when Elvis and Larry first met, and as time progressed, so did their friendship. Larry gave Elvis many books, as Larry had great knowledge on many aspects of Spirituality. Because of this, many of Elvis’ friend started to hate and despise Larry. They thought that if Elvis kept reading these books; it would lead him along the wrong path in life.
If I can dream, also mentions how Elvis felt about the people around him: Colonel Tom Parker his manager, the Memphis Mafia, his many other friends, and his lovers – including his last girlfriend, Ginger Alden. Priscilla Presley and his love for his only daughter, Lisa Marie.
Elvis was a deeply religious man, and an avid reader, who used to spend countless hours reading mostly Spiritual books. He also used to Meditate and pray quite a lot, so I guess, Elvis was on a Spiritual journey or a quest to find the true meaning of life.
Larry gives a great account on his point of view about Elvis, and mentions the finer and more in depth personal details on Elvis. Or you can call lt.’THE OTHER SIDE’ a side that not many people knew about, or for that matter, Elvis had. Furthermore, the books also states how Elvis dealt with his everyday frustrations, and expectations, even the pressure has was under. After all, he was considered by many, ‘the kind of Rock N Roll’...So he had to make everyone happy, he did not want to disappoint anyone.
There is also a sad side to all this, and how all these things were slowly destroying Elvis, without him realising it. Each day, and every problem that Elvis had, lead to his devastating death. Larry’s story is quite interesting, but I also like how Elvis had so much trust in him – enough so, to tell of his most personal secrets in detail. Some are shocking, and some are funny, as Elvis did have a sense of humour. When I read this book, l can’t help but get goose bumps reading it..
As I may have mentioned before, this book is an excellent read, but at the same time it can be quite heartbreaking – knowing how much of a kind, generous and wonderful human being Elvis was, and all that he went through. However, this book also inspires you to keep reading in order to find out what happened next.
So all in all, ‘ IF I CAN DREAM’ is a very touching book, and it makes you want to reach out and give Elvis a big hug just to let him know..’HEY, IT IS OK’’. If only this was possible. I think that this is the best book about Elvis and the most accurate and honest piece that was ever written. It was the peace that Elvis longed and searched for..
